hannukah 2007

December 10, 2007

hannukah is almost over for this year. we celebrated with joe’s family on saturday night. this year, it turned out being an entire family affair with joe’s family, dave’s family and my whole family. it was a lot of fun. i am so lucky that my family gets along so well with joe’s and dave’s families, and vice versa. we always have a blast together.

as always, the food was fabulous. joe’s mom made latkes, a hannukah staple; pasta salad; fruit salad; and i believe tuna salad. since i don’t eat meat, i don’t really know what else there was. 🙂

for dessert, i made a walnut chocolate torte. from scratch. and by that, i mean both the cake *and* the frosting. as you can see, i’m pretty proud of myself. i had never made a torte before, but it really turned out well. the frosting was the best part. it was awesome. and, i used my fabulous cake decorator to decorate the cake. it was the first time i’d used it, and it turned out really well. everyone loved my torte so much they didn’t even touch joe’s mom’s cookies. i felt kind of bad about that.

and what would hannukah be without presents? we both got some great gifts. joe’s parents got me a bunch of apple-themed items for my kitchen. yay! they also got us a nice memory box from bombay. it was another nice holiday.

happy thanksgiving!

November 21, 2007

i know it’s a day early, but i will be gone until tomorrow night, and by then it will be a little late for my thanksgiving wishes. we are heading up to joe’s parents’ cabin in blue ridge after i get off work. it’ll be fun. i love joe’s family, and we always have a lot of fun when we get together. but i’m a bit sad because it’s the first thanksgiving i will spend away from my family, and i’m just not used to it.

since i’m going to be the only vegetarian at thanksgiving dinner, i whipped up some of my family’s favorites last night to take along. i made vegetarian turkey slices filled with stuffing, wild rice with vegetarian chicken, and spice cupcakes to add to the dessert mix. yum, yum. i’m getting excited about tomorrow just thinking about all the food!

i hope you all have a wonderful thanksgiving with your family and friends!

weekend recap

October 29, 2007

this past weekend was one of those relaxing ones you just don’t want to end. we were planning on going to my old church and then to lunch at my parents’ on saturday, but my grandfather broke his foot and his fibula friday, so we were up late getting updates while my parents were at the hospital with him. everyone ended up sleeping in, so we stayed home. we had lunch together and then relaxed. joe napped and i scrapbooked. it was great.

that night, we had dinner at los reyes, our favorite local mexican restaurant, and rented knocked up, which was a great movie. it was hilarious. we also played quite a bit of sonic the hedgehog, since we bought a collection for the xbox that includes all the sega sonic games, all the game gear sonic games and a few new ones. sonic was one of my favorite games, so it’s fun to be able to play it again.

on sunday, we were up *very* early (think 6:30 a.m.) to meet joe’s dad and our brother-in-law, dave, for breakfast at bagelicious, a jewish deli in marietta. i heart bagelicious. the bagels are so.frickin.good. and let me just say, once you start eating new york bagels, you just can’t go back to the grocery store brands.

the best part of breakfast was when joe and dave arrived wearing the exact same shirt (but in different colors). it was hilarious. and, of course, i had to take a picture of the twins with their bagel bags. 🙂

after breakfast, i had to go into work for a little bit, and then joe and hit the tennis courts, where i beat him once again (that’s 3-0 now). then we napped for most of the afternoon, since we were so tired from being up so late friday night and up so early sunday morning.

now, it’s monday, and i’m already looking forward to the weekend. we’re taking a day trip up u.s. highway 41, which runs from chicago to florida. we were planning on it, and then joe pitched the idea to the sunday paper, so now he’s doing a story on our trip. it should be a lot of fun!

the case of the missing silverware

August 19, 2007

one by one, our silverware has been disappearing. we received four sets for our wedding (why, oh why can’t people buy off registries??), and a few months ago discovered we were down to three knives and three dinner forks. i wish i knew where they went. we didn’t even find them when we moved out of the apartment.

last night, i discovered we now are down to three tablespoons and three dessert forks. by some miracle, we still have four teaspoons. it is so strange how our silverware is disappearing. part of me wonders if aj is taking them from the drainboard, since he has been known to steal things in the past (i.e. my blush brush, joe’s razor). it’s a long shot because i don’t know how easy it would be for him to carry them (they’re nice and heavy), but it’s a theory.

thank goodness my mil is getting us silverware for our anniversary! have i mentioned how awesome my in-laws are??

the weekend recap

July 16, 2007

we had quite a busy weekend! saturday was pretty typical for us. we went to my church in the morning, had lunch, relaxed for a little bit and then headed out to meet rachel, dave and joe’s parents for live free or die harder. that movie was awesome. it was a little longer than most, but i didn’t want it to end. there was so much action, and it was hilarious.

on our way back home, we decided to get off the interstate in kennesaw and take back roads home because a department of transportation sign alerted us to construction a few miles ahead. we had seen construction back up traffic for 10 miles on our way down, so we decided to avoid it.

we were in the exit lane preparing to get off when we saw a car cut off a jeep that was in the fast lane. the driver of the jeep hit his brakes to avoid hitting the car and, since it was raining, spun out and did 360-degree circles all the way across the interstate, getting hit by a semi-truck in the far right lane, before ending up on the side of the road.

we had seen the semi-truck swerve, and we didn’t think it had hit the jeep at first. joe pulled over, yelled at me to call 911 and ran over to the jeep to check on the driver. neither of us thought he would have made it, but he was alive and seemed ok, despite being very shaken up over the incident.

we were out there for about an hour, waiting for the police to come, giving our statement and talking with the driver’s family. the back side of his car was dented, and the impact with the truck caused one of his back wheels to pop off and wedge between the truck’s tires. he was very, very lucky the truck hit only the back of his car, and we were amazed no other vehicles hit him.

it was late when we got home, and we were up early sunday to prepare for my southern living party. it was so much fun! i love hosting, and i had quite a spread. i made pasta salad and brownies, and i had mini pita loaves with hummus and a fruit salad that my mil made. i also made this *yummy* punch with pineapple juice, strawberry koolaid and ginger ale. i wanted to make an ice ring, but i couldn’t find a bundt pan in the size i wanted, so i made ice cubes out of pineapple juice with pineapples in each one. everyone loved them! i wish i had taken pictures. i remembered after the fact that i had forgotten.

my party was such a success, and if any of you want to order some fabulous things for your homes, let me know! i can send you the link to the catalog so you can order online.

June 5, 2007

what? an unprotected post?! haha.

my dinner on sabbath went quite well. my family was about 45 minutes early, so i wasn’t ready at all. my mom jumped in and washed the dishes in my sink (thanks mom!), and then she and my grandmother opened presents. the brothers and i gave my parents a sharebook. it’s a neat scrapbook that several people create. the organizer sends pages to everyone with everything already included, they send them back and then you put them right in. it’s incredibly easy and fun. my parents loved it.

for my grandmother, i made a family scrapbook. i did about 30 pages in two days, which is a record for me, and i have to say, it looked really good. she loved it.

the meal was a huge success. i made lasagna, tomato and basil pasta, corn and garlic bread. for dessert, i made a coconut cake. i couldn’t really taste the coconut, but everyone said it was really good. there are only 2 pieces left, so it must have been! i only have four chairs that match my dining room table (my parents have two at their place still), so randy and joe sat on bar stools. joe told randy it was probably the only time he’d eat on fine china while sitting on bar stool. hehe.

dizzy really wanted to join us.

after dinner, my grandma gave me a belt that had belonged to her grandmother. it’s always hung in her house, and now she wants it to hang in mine. it was a very special gift for me. the entire belt is in this picture. the belt is 21 inches long. seriously, that’s how tiny my great-great-grandmother was. i’m going to have to take a picture of it hooked together so you can really get a feel for how small it is.

i love hosting meals, especially for family. next up is having joe’s parents over.

spidey 3

May 4, 2007

joe and i went to the midnight showing of spiderman 3 in atlanta last night. it was fun because we went with a bunch of people (my brothers, my sister-in-law, a rabbi at joe’s school, his son and a friend). the movie was pretty good, but i was more proud of the fact that i was able to stay awake THE WHOLE TIME. i’ve only been to two other midnight movies — star wars and the blues brothers — and fell asleep during both. in fact, i don’t even think i made it through the beginning of the blues brothers. heh. damn arthritis. i’m going to do nothing but sleep when i finally get pregnant!

on our way out of town last night, we saw the new chilis is open. yay! that made me happy. very happy. chilis is one of my favorite restaurants. so that is where we will be tonight for dinner. i can’t wait. other than that and having my brother and one of joe’s friends over tomorrow night for pizza and video games (and melrose place for me) we don’t have too much planned this weekend. what do you all have planned?
